Our Story
The History of Aling Banang PH
Starting from humble stall in the San Juan Public Market in the 1930’s, Aling Banang has been serving time-tested and proven Pinoy favorite since then. When it comes to pansit and halo-halo, we’re always top of mind.
1930's
The Beginning of FoodHill
Aling Banang’s history began in the 1930s with Urbana Silva Santiago, who started a modest halo-halo stall in the San Juan Public Market, a legacy continued and expanded by her daughter Adoracion (“Ising”) and subsequent generations, preserving their family’s traditional Filipino recipes and values over decades of family-run operations.
The Humble Beginnings (1930s)
Founder: Urbana Silva Santiago, known as Aling Banang.
Location: A small stall at the San Juan Public Market.
Specialty: Homemade halo-halo, served in empty evaporated milk cans, featuring red monggo, sweetened banana, pinipig, macapuno, gulaman, sago, ube halaya, and leche flan made from duck eggs.
1930's
Expansion and Family Legacy
Expansion and Legacy
Succession: Aling Banang’s daughter, Adoracion (“Ising”), took over the business at age 18 and retained the name “Aling Banang’s” to honor her mother.
Growth: Ising expanded the business beyond the original stall, and her children and grandchildren continued to grow the franchise, establishing branches in various locations like Marikina, Makati, and Shaw Boulevard.
Core Values: The family-run restaurant emphasizes fresh ingredients, avoiding artificial flavorings, and treating loyal patrons like family.
Signature Dishes & Culture
Beyond Halo-Halo: While famous for halo-halo, Aling Banang’s also serves other Filipino favorites such as pancit sa bilao (noodles in woven trays), tapsilog, and sizzling sisig.
Family Heritage: The business is centered on sharing their family’s love for authentic Filipino cuisine, creating a warm, home-like atmosphere for customers.
Consistency:
Today, Aling Banang’s remains a beloved institution, known for affordable, home-cooked Filipino comfort food and a strong emphasis on family and customer relationships.
